Corinthians 13: The Guestbook is closed. Just did a 'google-wack' for Noel Kenchington (my late granddad) and came across this site to discover that my own father had been here before me. How embarassment! Been to Tardebigge a couple of times, the most memorable was a family service with screaming kids and an inaudible sermon.Phil Kenchington <phil_kenchington@hotmail.com> UK - Sunday, July 31, 2005 we are looking for all the members of the cole-wilkin family uk fiona <fionacole1@btinternet.com> southend, UK - Monday, July 11, 2005 what a great site, i am researching my harris family tree, william harris and his wife abigail lived in the resoviour cottage in tardebigge in the 1800s anyone who knows about them please contact me. thanks bernadette bernadette ainsworth <brig_bernie@btinternet.co.uk> preston, UK - Wednesday, June 08, 2005 I have found out some more information since I last signed this guset book. My Great, Great Grandfather, William James Hobbes (1814-c.1881) practised as a solicitor in Stratford upon Avon in 1840s and 1850s and was baptised in Holy Trinity, Stratford in 1824 (aged 14). On the Mormon Index he is registered as having been born in Tardebigge (a fair way from Stratford?) and married there to Anne Berk in in c.1839. Are there any family members out there? Berk, Hobbes? Other names associated wih the family are: Ashford, Rice, Davenport. Thanks Patrick Russell patrick russell <pwrusselluk@yahoo.co.uk> Ealing, London, UK - Wednesday, May 18, 2005 I am researching family history and think my Grandfather (William James Hobbes 1815 -) was from Tardebigge. He was a solicitor and movd to london in the 1860s. It's possible that he claimed to be from Stratford upon Avon in the 1881 census. Anyone out there hat caan throw some light? patrick russell <pwrusselluk@yahoo.co.uk> ealing, london, UK - Wednesday, April 20, 2005 Visited you Parish last July 2004 and was lucky enough to be shown inside. The visit was very special to me as my ancestor was vicar there many years ago. Richard Bradshaw 1744-1780.If anyone has any historical information on the Bradshaws please email me in New Zealand Margaret Thompson <tommotroop@xtra.co.nz> Howick, New Zealand - Tuesday, April 05, 2005 What a breath of fresh air your website is - thank you for reviving memories of my childhood days in the 1950s when I used to visit my grandmother Hannah White who lived in Banks Green Bentley in the Parish of Tardebigge. She raised 14 children (yes!)and lived in a little cottage which is still there - but now merged with the one next door. I visited the area several years ago and stopped by the cottage to find that it was now named 'Annawhite Cottage'(more than a coincidence?)The lady of the house informed me that she knew of the woman with 14 children who had lived in the house in the past - having been given some information by Mrs Cave who lived close by. Hannah was buried in the churchyard at Tardebigge in around 1958 but I was not able to find the grave. If there is anyone in the parish who still remembers my grandmother please make contact. PETER WHITE <petepace2002-cricket@yahoo.co.uk> WORCESTER, UK - Wednesday, February 09, 2005 Because of a family connection I am interested in Captain William Emmott. I have found a list of army officers on the Internet where it says 'Memorial at St. Bartholemew's, Tardebigge , between Bromsgrove and Redditch - To the memory of Captain William Emmott formerly of the Royal Horse Guards who died 14. 4. 1805 aged 45 years. This monument is erected by Harriett Baroness Windsor, in grateful token of the zeal and energy evinced by him in the discharge of his duties as adjutant of the Queens Own Worcestershire Yeomanry Cavalry under her brother The Earl of Plymouth and her husband The Hon R.H. Clive.' I do not believe the 1805 date can be right - he was a young officer at Waterloo in 1815 and I think the reference to the Queen's Own belongs to 1830s. Can anyone kindly check the date on the memorial? And any pointers to finding out more about him and the family locally would be very welcome. (I'm a minister of the Methodist Church and appreciate the site anyway!) Wendy Hughes-Jones <hughes.jones@virgin.net> Husbands Bosworth,Leics, UK - Tuesday, July 29, 2003 I wonder if anyone can help - I have traced my family back to Tardebigge - my great great great grandfather Richard is recorded in the 1851 census for Red Hill King's Norton as having been born in Tardebigge circa 1799. However they seemed to have moved back at some point as my great grandfather Thomas is in the 1881 census in Foregate Street Feckenham and my great uncle Henry (Harry)was the baker in Astwood Bank.I have a family tree for a Richard christened 22 Nov 1778 but have yet to make a link to him? Frances Stringer <dolly_daisy@hotmail.com> Newton Abbot, Devon, UK - Monday, March 03, 2003 Glad to see the Guidebook is still in use! David Harris <david@harris6918.fsbusiness.co.uk> London, UK - Sunday, January 19, 2003 Came accross this site as tracing my ancestors DUGGINS and HAWKINS. Was interested to see the church has a Cookes memorial. Does anyone know what this is as one of my ancestors was an Emily Cooke who married Thomas Hawkins? Hope to get down to the church shortly and see for myself. Nancy Couldwell <pncouldwell@hotmail.com> Leeds, UK - Sunday, November 24, 2002 trying to trace book 1000 years in tardebigge, can you throw any light on this publication please knowle library <andyhalliday@talk21.com> bristol, UK - Thursday, August 08, 2002 Tardebigge's etymology is doubtful. It does not mean "tower on the hill" as you suggested on the website. It was recorded as Taerdebicgan, circa 1000, suggesting a derivation from Old English torr "tower" and *bica "pointed ridge", but this seems unlikely considering the topography of the area. In the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Terdeberie, suggesting "Taerda's fortified place", from the Old English personal name meaning "warrior" and burh(dative, i.e. at the place, byrig), but this is again unlikely. Records of it as Terdebige in 1186 suggest a Celtic inversion-compound in which the descriptive word comes last. The meaning suggested for the 1186 record is "flat piece of land where barley/oats grow", from Old English trendel "circular piece of land, flat piece of land" and Old Norse byggr "barley", but this is again doubtful because of the spelling differences over the years. Sorry to say this, but even, I, as a place-name expert, have no idea what it means!! The village needs new street lights like what we have up here in Liverpool. The ones you have are out-of-date and well damaged, you should have Liverpudlian ones. I am also an unofficial expert in road/traffic matters too. Adam Cole-Wilkin Formby, Merseyside, UK - Monday, July 01, 2002 There are few places in the U.K. that compares with Tardebigge, Ihave lived here now for more than twenty years, two of my children attended Tardebigge school, Ihad the pleasure of working there for several yearsand now have agrandaughter attending.
